From Wounds to Wisdom: My Journey of Healing Childhood Trauma By - Dr. Nabanita Sengupta (Council member)

Childhood often carries unseen scars that shape the adults we become. My story intertwines the highs of academic achievement with the silent struggles of self-doubt and the immense challenges life threw my way.
As a shy, introverted girl in a Bengali-medium government school, I found solace in academics. It was my refuge, especially as I navigated the pain of losing my father at just 15. His absence left not just an emotional void but thrust my family into financial challenges. Adding to this, I was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, a chronic kidney disease that marked another hurdle in my young life.
Despite excelling academically, moments of being excluded socially and grappling with insecurities often made me question my self-worth. Yet, life pushed me further when I embarked on the demanding journey of medical training—enduring relentless 36-48 hour shifts and societal expectations as a married woman living away from her husband for higher studies and choosing not to become a mother till she became financially independent.
Finding Strength Amid Struggles
A pivotal lesson was understanding that my worth wasn’t tied to how much I achieved but how deeply I embraced myself. My success masked my pain, but true healing began when I started validating myself from within. Practices like mindfulness, affirmations, and self-compassion allowed me to rewrite the narrative of my life.
I discovered resilience not in suppressing my struggles but in transforming them. From a timid girl to becoming one of the few child psychiatrists of the country, the journey wasn’t just about professional achievements but about healing my spirit.
Maya Angelou’s words echo my path:
"You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it."
Moving Forward with Gratitude
Every struggle shaped me into who I am today. The insecurities and challenges I faced are now the foundation of my empathy and strength.
To anyone navigating similar paths: know that your scars are not weaknesses; they are stories of survival and growth. Turn your pain into purpose, and let your resilience define your legacy. Life’s hardships may shape us, but they do not define who we become.

Amazing and inspiring journey! Bravo 👏👏❤️
